GERRY RAFFERTY



Mi Gerry Rafferty (con esto ya lo he dicho todo)

Gerry Rafferty nació en Paisley, Escocia (Gran Bretaña), el 16 de abril de 1947.  Su madre era escocesa y su padre irlandés. 

En su adolescencia formó una banda llamada The Mavericks con su compañero de colegio Joe Egan.

En 1969, después de asistir a un concierto de The HumblebumsBilly Connolly, uno de sus miembros, invita a Rafferty a unirse a la banda.

[En 1965, Billy Connolly formó un grupo folk con Tam Harvey llamado The Humblebums. Connolly cantaba, tocaba la guitarra y el banjo, mientras que Harvey (guitarra/mandolina) era un consumado guitarrista de Bluegrass. El dúo se hizo popular tocando en salas y bares de los alrededores de Glasgow,  donde Connolly introduciría cada canción con un preámbulo humorístico.

En 1969, The Humblebums lanzaron su primer álbum, poco después Gerry Rafferty se unió a la banda. 
La llegada de Rafferty cambió la dirección de la banda y Harvey abandonó el grupo.

The New Humblebums o The Humblebums, comenzaron a lograr un éxito mucho mayor con su mezcla de voces. Ese mismo año, el dúo lanzó su primer disco juntos y el segundo álbum de la banda, The New Humblebums. El álbum tuvo un gran éxito en Glasgow y fue bien recibido a nivel nacional. 

El éxito de los Humbelbums continuó con el álbum Open up the Door (1970).

Pero Connolly y Rafferty querían cosas diferentes. Rafferty quería concentrarse en la música, mientras que Connolly estaba más interesado en ser humorista, por lo que la ruptura fue inevitable.
Connolly comenzó su carrera como comediante y Rafferty siguió con la música.]

En 1971, Rafferty graba un álbum en solitario (en el que colaboró Joe Egan aportando voces y en la composición de unos de los temas) llamado  Can I Have My Money Back?

Poco tiempo después (1972), Gerry Rafferty y Joe Egan se unen para formar el grupo Stealers Wheel.
La banda obtuvo un gran éxito con la canción  Stuck in the Middle With You   (utilizada después por Quentin Tarantino para la banda sonora de su película Reservoir Dogs -1992-).

El grupo se separó en 1975. Una de las consecuencias de esta separación fueron los  problemas legales con la casa discográfica, lo que provocó que Rafferty no pudiera volver a grabar durante tres años.
Por fin, pudo grabar nuevamente en el año 1978.


El éxito le llegó gracias a "Baker Street",  su tema más conocido internacionalmente.

Con la llegada de los años 80 y tras “Snakes and Ladders” (1980) su música perdió el favor del público y a pesar de escribir buenas canciones,  Gerry Rafferty no consiguió recuperar la popularidad de antaño.

Por otra parte, el cantautor comenzó a cansarse de las demandas que la fama le había traído. Solía recordar "No fue difícil para mí alejarme de la fama, nunca podría vivir siendo una celebridad las veinticuatro horas del día".

Gerry Rafferty falleció el 4 de enero de 2011.

Magnífico Gerry Rafferty, aunque a veces ("Cafe Le Cabotin", "Mattie's Rag", "Whatever's written in your heart"...) tenga ramalazos del peor McCartney.
El saxo de "Baker Street", inolvidable.

Me gustaban tanto como a otros el de "las plantitas"...

"Snakes and Ladders" y "City to City" son sagrados (para mí).

Mucha gente descubrió el saxo gracias a este tema y también se vendieron un montón de saxos en aquella época.

No es muy conocido en España, aunque todo el mundo conoce "Baker Street".

La pronunciación en francés es impronunciable.
